The Neighborhood of Normandy Isles & Shores
Community Info
Normandy Isles is a neighborhood in North Beach, which is part of Miami Beach. The man-made island sits in Biscayne Bay, west of Miami Beach. Normandy Isles Historic District has some excellent examples of Mediterranean Revival, Classical Revival, Masonry Vernacular, Minimal Traditional, Art Deco and Moderne. Most of the buildings were part of the postwar modern style better known as “Miami Modern” or “MiMo”. It’s a beautifully planned community, one that especially caters to anyone wanting to plant deep roots in Miami Beach.
Here are just a few things that make the Normandy Isles neighborhood stand out:
Place Vendome Fountain: As the center of the Normandy Isles commercial district, the fountain is circled by restaurants, shops and lounges open day and night for adventurous residents. Enjoy a quiet walk at the circle, have an intimate meal at one of the many restaurants or simply have a cocktail while you watch happy people stroll by.
Normandy Shores Golf Course: Opened in 1941 and redesigned in 2008, this 18-hole, par-71 golf course is small, but challenging. If you enjoy testing your golf prowess, this one will bring out the pro in you.
Normandy Isle Park & Pool: On top of the four-lane pool, they have basketball courts, a tot lot, soccer field, and a party pavilion. The park has programming for kids and adults, making this the perfect place to meet and hang out with your neighbors.
A short history of the Normandy Isles neighborhood:
- It took two years to dredge the two mangrove-covered islands in Biscayne Bay that would become Normandy Isles.
- Normandy Beach Properties Corporation developed Normandy Isles in the late 1920’s. The
- French-themed neighborhood (all the streets are named after towns, points-of interest and provinces in France) was the brainchild of Henri Levy, a French-born movie theater magnate from Cincinnati.
- Normandy Isles Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. Enjoy the architecture.
- The following people call (or have called) Normandy Isles home; Sportscaster and entertainer Roy Firestone, The Real Housewives of Miami TV Personality Alexia Echevarria, and restaurateur / ex-CEO of Caesars Palace Clifford S. Perlman.
Restaurants & Attractions
Some of our favorite places to dine around Normandy Isles:
Katana Japanese Restaurant: Two words: Sushi. Boats. Amazing sushi floats to your table on a little river that circles the bar. Pick from some of their standard dishes (priced by the color of the plate) or order something you’ve been craving for. This is some of the best sushi in Miami Beach, reasonably priced but oh-so-good. Some advice? Everything can be beautifully paired with a Sapporo. For real. Drink one.
Sawaddee: Right on the edge of Normandy Isle, this hole-in-the-wall is a cool find. Big portions of authentic Thai cuisine, simple, delicious and flavorful. Take home your leftovers and enjoy it again when you’re binging your favorite show on Netflix. One thing to remember – they don’t serve alcohol but it is BYOB with no corkage fees. So bring your favorite bottle of wine or beer and sit back.
7ty One Restaurant & Coffee: Not many Venezuelan restaurants on our lists, but this one makes the grade. Come here for a hearty breakfast or a tasty arepa. This is a neighborhood joint, frequented by the locals and those looking for Latin American street fare. And coffee.
Favorite things to do in and around Normandy Isles:
Night walks: One of the joys of living in a small neighborhood is it’s walkability. Normandy Isle is one of the area’s best planned communities, designed for interaction, quality of life and fun. So go ahead and walk down 71st street, Normandy Isles main causeway, and enjoy the relaxed nightlife. So many little restaurants, cafes and bars to pick from, you might have to do more than one.
The Beach: You are in the middle of the bay. Head east and walk over the sandy dunes of North Beach to the ocean. This is the northern stretch of Miami Beach, which is home to the North Beach Bandshell — an open-air amphitheater — which hosts frequent music events. On any given month, you can attend an opera, reggae concert, flamenco show, and so much more.
Visit your neighbors: Nearby, you have so many great little neighborhoods if you feel the need to spice things up. A short Uber/Lyft can put you in North Beach, Surfside, or Bal Harbour. Each has their own color and vibe. Pick one and make things happen. Want to dress up and spend a glamorous night out? Bal Harbour. Want to watch a play in the open air? North Beach. Want to see the moon glide across the sky from the ocean boardwalk? Surfside. What do you want to do?
Location, location, location. Normandy Isles is an oasis in the middle of a sea of entertainment and activities. You can escape the hustle and bustle of Miami and Miami Beach and stay in the hood, or take a quick drive and jump into the electric nightlife and beach life South Florida is famous for. Normandy Isle gives you access to all the cool things Miami has to offer, without sacrificing the benefits of living in a quiet community.
