The Neighborhood of Fisher Island

Community Info

Fisher Island is a private island off the coast of Miami Beach. A little smaller than a square mile, it is home to some of the world’s wealthiest families. Homeowners are mostly seasonal residents – about 20% of the residents are there at any given time. There are some private homes, but most of the island’s properties are luxury condominiums with amazing views of the ocean, South Beach and Downtown Miami. The median home value on Fisher Island? About $3-million. The island has established a Mediterranean look and feel through its architecture and lush landscaping, and it’s THE most exclusive neighborhood in Miami.

Here are just a few things that make the Fisher Island neighborhood stand out:

Ultra-exclusive: The only way in and out of Fisher Island is by yacht or ferry. Period. OK – and helicopter. But who has one on hand for everyday use? Once across you have added security – only guests and residents are allowed on the island. Fisher Island is most likely the safest, most private neighborhood in Miami. If your dream is to be able to cut yourself off from the hustle-and-bustle of South Florida but not the pampering, this is your neighborhood.

It’s a Luxury Resort Lifestyle: The island’s amenities are everything you imagine. Seaside golf course, spa, tennis, pools, restaurants, an aviary, a mile of private beach, boating – you can live year-round as if you were on a short break.

It’s a Village: On top of the luxury setting, you also have some of your daily necessities on hand. There’s a small grocery store and a post office, and a private elementary school for island residents and surrounding Miami Beach.

Central location: You are on an island a little off the coast of one of the world’s most desirable cities. Literally a 5-minute boat ride to downtown Miami and South Beach. This means easy access to museums, performance theaters and unparalleled food and nightlife.

A short history of the Fisher Island neighborhood:

  • The island was first owned by Dana Dorsey, Florida’s first black millionaire. He sold it to auto entrepreneur and real estate developer Carl Fisher in 1919.
  • Fisher traded 7-acres of the island for a 250-foot yacht – owned by railroad baron William K. Vanderbilt II. Some say, they were a little tipsy when the deal was made.
  • Fisher Island is the most expensive zip code in Florida. Thanks Oprah.
  • Who lives / has lived on Fisher Island? Oprah Winfrey, tennis legends Boris Becker, Andre Agassi and Caroline Wozniak, Russian ice hockey stars Pavel Burem, Sergei Gonchar, and Ilya Kovalchuk, billionaires Bharat Desai and Martin Zweig, Victoria’s Secret model Karolina Kurkova, Mel Brooks and many more…

Restaurants & Attractions

Some of our favorite places to dine around Fisher Island:

Note: You must be invited by an island resident or club member – or be a hotel guest – to enter the island.

Garwood Lounge: A famous steakhouse set in the historic Vanderbilt Mansion, this experience is more than just superior cuts of steak. Melt-in-your-mouth signature beef, an amazing variety of butters and sauces – and fresh seafood too. Seating only 34, it is an intimate affair among a small group of steak-lovers. Added ambiance? Nightly piano performance to accompany your culinary treat.

La Trattoria: Located in the piazza-style Town Center, La Trattoria is an Italian-style restaurant with homemade everything – pizza, pasta, bread. Plus, it comes with a beautiful view of the marina. Laid back and casual, it’s a delicious stop as the sun sets and gold and red rule the sky.

Beach Club: The food at the Beach Club is exceptional – but coupled with postcard-worthy views, sugar-white beach sand (imported from the Bahamas), and sparking ocean – it becomes enhanced with nature’s harmony. Feast under the shade of their seaside pavilions along the stretch of uncrowded beach – it will be a magical meal.

Favorite things to do in and around Fisher Island:

Note: You must be invited by an island resident or club member – or be a hotel guest – to enter the island.

A day at the Clubhouse: I mean, where else can you go to get in some quick recreational points? Start with their world-class Spa, have a drink poolside (or oceanside) and have the staff make your pampering dreams come true. You are in the most exclusive island in South Florida. Make good use of it.

South Beach: Off-island adventures are literally. Right. There. Spend a day/night of shopping, dining and clubbing in the international playground the world knows as South Beach. There is so much to do here it will be hard to exhaust the possibilities.

Downtown Miami: The cultural center of our amazing city – musicals, museums, concerts, dance, sports, theater – it’s all there. Start with the Perez Art Museum (PAM) and work your way up to box seats at the ballet. The schedule of events is mind-boggling good for all ages. Our personal favorite is the Frost Science Museum. The universe is quite beautiful.

Location, location, location. You are in Fisher Island – so what are you waiting for? You can hop around Miami and taste everything she has to offer. Design District, Wynwood, Downtown Miami, Miami Beach (all of it), MiMo, Brickell – it’s all close enough to explore without roaming too far from home.
